Description

Adrian has created a modern design on the classic peppermill. The precision and time he carefully puts into each mill is testament to his true craftmanship.

It is not in any way a quick make on the lathe, as he carefully dries the wood in stages. Firstly he will dry the piece of chosen wood this can takes years, he will then turn it into a rough shape, to then dry further, checking regularly throughout the drying time. The grain in the wood is continuous through the length of the mill as he uses a piece from the top of the top, to create the insert. Before the ceramic Crush Grind mechanism is placed in the hollowed out mill he will then sit to dry further to ensure if there is any movement in he can carefully shave down as required. He will then sand and polish the mill using a food safe oil to protect the timber and strengthen it. Repeating the process of sitting to dry and set in room temperature for another couple of months to ensure there is no further movement in the timber, and the top twists with ease.

When making a "Pair" of mills, Adrian will select a piece big enough for a pair to ensure they have come from the same log to be a true pair. Putting even more time and love into creating such beauty.

The Maker

Adrian Cammack has been turning wood at his home in Speyside for almost a decade. He was inspired when exploring deciduous woodland beside his home; to preserve and celebrate some of our native hardwoods. All items are turned by hand from hardwoods derived from this source, unless otherwise stated. Most items are turned over-size (‘roughed out’) from wet wood before setting aside to air dry until seasoned, where they are returned to the lathe and finished.

Fallen woodland floor material is a particular favourite, often challenging to turn but rewarding. Grain colouring and patterns (spalting) are as a consequence of early fungal attack – a gift from nature and very special.
